Environmental, Health and Safety Manager
Location: Stoke on Trent
Salary: £35k - £40k
Pension: - up to 10% contribution plus excellent benefits

A large specialist manufacturing company who employs over 400 people on their site in Stoke on Trent are now looking to recruit an Environmental, Health and Safety Manager to join their team.

The company are accredited with ISO 9001, ISO 14001 with a view to gaining OHSAS 18001.

Environmental, Health and Safety Manager - Job responsibilities:
The prime purpose of the Environmental, Health and Safety Manager role is to proactively develop, manage, co-ordinate and facilitate the company`s health, safety and environmental policies and audit requirements.

This position plays a pivotal role in safe guarding the company`s reputation, employee safety and protecting management from liability by ensuring appropriate focus is maintained on environmental, and health and safety issues, monitoring compliance and assisting managers to develop and sustain a safe and environmentally sustainable workplace.

Environmental:

• Leading and fostering a culture of continual environmental improvements across all Group sites ensuring ISO4001 status
• The preparation and approval of an environmental plan
• Monitoring key environmental issues and impacts, ensuring that the Management team are kept informed of incidents or issues which may adversely affect the company`s reputation or lead to legal proceedings
• Giving high priority to environmental policy compliance and delivering on company environmental plans and goals
• Ensuring that Group complies with all applicable environmental standards and performance and legislative requirements
• Analyses any business processes to identify problems and opportunities for developing strategies for environmental improvement
• Taking a proactive approach and facilitating a programme that ensures there remains a strong companywide focus on continuous improvement in environmental management practices and that an individual commitment and awareness of environmental sustainability is visual around the business
• Liaising with our technical teams to ensure that we identify and minimise the potential environmental risks from our products and operations
• Working with Line Managers to ensure that we pursue a materials strategy based on the principles of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle
• To carry out and update COSHH (Control of substances Hazardous to Health) assessments
• Responsibility for ongoing development and implementation of the company`s ISO14001 Environmental Management System

Health and Safety:

• Designing, developing and implementing systems to ensure compliance with Health and Safety legislation
• Maintaining familiarity with changes and developments in Health and Safety legislation and practice, effectively communicating and implementing changes to existing systems as required
• Inspecting and auditing departments to ensure compliance with the company`s Health and Safety management system
• Effective co-ordination of the Health and Safety Improvement Team
• Supporting the management team to ensure the accurate reporting and recording of all health and safety incidents, near misses and hazards in a timely manner using company procedures and systems
• Providing advice and support to Managers on health and safety issues, ensuring that Managers receive timely advice and support in the interpretation and understanding of the Health and Safety Legislation
• Attending Health and Safety Improvement Team Meetings and Steering Group Meetings
• Attending Manufacturing Daily Meetings
• Leading the development and delivery of Health and Safety training and certification and providing proactive advice to Managers on training providers
• Producing and managing the Health and Safety Departmental Budget
• Advising Managers and Team Leaders on Health and Safety implications of new equipment/facilities prior to implementation
• Ensuring all investigations are carried out for all near misses/incidents/accidents and corrective actions are implemented to manage future risk
• Timely liaison with regulatory authorities for RIDDOR reportable accidents or incidents
• Preparing near miss/incident and accident statistical reporting for management on a monthly basis in time for the Operations Meeting
• Supporting the HR Department where required with regards to the active management of employees on work related injuries, phased return to works and health care surveillance e.g., hearing tests, lung function tests, X-rays
• Work with the HR Department to monitor and evaluate Occupational Health Provisions
• Actively contributing to the development and implementation of overall company strategies as a member of the Operational Leadership Team
• To carry out Health & Safety induction training with all new employees and refresher training as necessary for existing employees
• To carry out and update manual handing assessments
• To support Line Managers in the carrying out and updating of Risk Assessments
• Liaise and consult with the Trade Union Representative regarding all health and safety issues
• Ensure that the Fire Risk Assessment is produced and updated
• Specify and ensure adequate provision of workwear
• Maintain a register of First Aiders and ensure the adequate provision of first-aid and welfare facilities. Ensure all First Aiders are appropriately trained
• Liaise as necessary with other organisations and relevant authorities, and provide assistance and cooperation concerning audits and remedial actions
• Develop procedures to ensure that contractors, suppliers, consultants and other visitors to the company comply with relevant legislation and safety policies

Environmental, Health and Safety Manager - Person Requirements:
The ideal candidate MUST come from the Manufacturing Industry as an Environmental, Health and Safety Manager. You will also have the following skills, Qualifications and experience:

• Ideally hold a NEBOSH Diploma or Equivalent
• Experience with maintaining ISO 14001
• Ideally hold an Environmental qualification such as IEMA or NEBOSH
• Have a pro-active and hands on approach
• Able to promote a positive and engaged HSE culture
